GS Caltex (CEO Hur Saehong) has established a strategic cooperation framework with Korea Southern Power Co., Ltd. (KOSPO) to enhance self-generation facilities as well as hydrogen operations and technologies.

On September 30, the two companies signed the Agreement on Technical Exchanges for Power Generation Facilities and Carbon Neutrality at GS Caltex’s Yeosu Complex in Jeollanam-do. Key attendees included GS Caltex’s Head of Asset Management, Jin Gi-seop, and KOSPO’s Vice President of Power Generation Department, Lee Young-jae.

Based on this agreement, GS Caltex will work with KOSPO to optimize the operation of gas turbines, the core self-generation facilities of the Yeosu Complex. These LNG-fueled facilities help reduce carbon emissions. Their further development will draw on KOSPO’s advanced operational management capabilities, built on its expertise as the operator of the largest number of gas turbines among Korea’s public power generating companies.

Additionally, GS Caltex and KOSPO will cooperate on operation and facility management technologies across the hydrogen value chain, from production and consumption to energy transition. In line with the government’s carbon neutrality policy, KOSPO is reviewing the long-term adoption of hydrogen ‘co-firing,’ blending hydrogen with LNG and other conventional fuels for power generation — an initiative that requires GS Caltex’s expertise in hydrogen process operations and facility management.

In July, GS Caltex held the first Gas Turbine Technology Exchange Meeting with power generation companies under the GS Group. Going forward, the company aims to further expand this cooperative network with KOSPO’s participation.

According to GS Caltex’s Head of Asset Management, Jin Gi-seop, “Exchanging expertise with KOSPO will strengthen the foundation of carbon reduction technologies for both companies.”

KOSPO’s Vice President of Power Generation Department, Lee Young-jae added, “By sharing KOSPO’s knowhow in power generation facility operations and GS Caltex’s hydrogen process technologies, the two companies can create synergies to push past limits and continue growing.”

In response to the rapidly changing business environment shaped by climate change and energy transition, GS Caltex is accelerating its Deep Transformation, a fundamental innovation for sustainable growth. As part of this effort, the company is also pursuing a Green Transformation focused on reducing carbon in existing businesses and expanding new low-carbon ventures, with the goal of making the leap toward becoming a lower-carbon refining and chemical complex.
